vocab
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell membrane | controls the passage of molecules into and out of the cell |
| cell wall | Shapes plant cells |
| mitochondria | produces the energy a cell needs to carry out its functions |
| lysosomes | uses chemicals to break down food and worn out cell parts |
| vacuoles | stores food, water, wastes, and other materials |
| golgi bodies | received proteins & materials from the ER, packages them, & distributes them |
| chloroplasts | captures energy from the sunlight and uses it to produce food in plant cells |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | has passageways that carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another |
| Ribosomes | assembles amino acids to create proteins |
| nucleus | control center of the cell; contains DNA |
| nucleolus | found inside the nucleus and produces ribosomes |
| chromatin | tiny strands inside the nucleus that contains the instructions for directing the cell's functions |
| microtubules | allows movement of organelles within the cell |
| centriole | organizes the spindle in cell division |
| transport vesicles | shuttles proteins between organelles |
| microfilament | allows contraction and movement of the cells |
| intermediate filaments | anchors organelles, holds nucleus in place |
| secretory vesicles | released by the golgi apparatus, travels to the surface of the cell to release its contents |
| flagella | allows the cell to move in space |
| chromosome | genetic information storage, located in nucleus |
| rough er | where proteins are made and receive signalling molecules |
| smooth er | synthesis and transports of lipids |
| cytoplasm | gel-like fluid where the organelles are found |
| central vacuole | storage of water, chemicals and wastes in plant cells |
| organelle | general name for structures in the cytoplasm |
| cytosol | liquid inside the cell |
| cilia | very similar to structure in flagella, usually found in groups in the cell surface |
