Poetry, Drama, Prose and Point of View

| Sentence | This a complete, written thought with a subject and a predicate. These combine to make paragraphs. |
| Paragraph | This is made up of related sentences. Lots of these make a chapter. |
| Chapter | This is a section of a book. Sometimes longer books are divided into these with titles. |
| Characters | These are the people, animals, or other objects in the story. |
| Dialogue | This is what the characters say in the play. |
| Setting | This tells the story's place and time. |
| Plot | This is the sequence of events from the story's beginning to its end. |
| Conflict | This is the problem in the story. It happens when one or more characters want something, but something else gets in the way. |
| Point of View | Who is telling the story |
| Meter | A pattern of accented or unaccented syllables, the "beat" or rhythm of a poem |
| Rhyme | Words that have the same ending sound |
| Repetition | Repeating words or phrases, the "refrain" |
| Line | basic unit of a poem; together they make stanzas |
| Stanza | section of a poem; consists of a line or group of lines |
| Rhyme Scheme | A poem's pattern of rhyming lines |
| Theme | The message or lesson of the text (usually inferred) |
| Stanza Break | blank space dividing two stanzas from each other |
| Script | The text of the entire play |
| Acts | These are larger sections of the play. These are made up of smaller scenes. |
| Scenes | These are smaller sections of the play. These are grouped into acts. |
| Stage Directions | This explains how characters should say their lines or what action should occur in the scene. |
| Costumes | These include clothing, hairdos, and accessories worn by the actors. |
| Props | These are movable items on stage to be used by the actors. |
| Sets | This is the furniture and scenery that are on the stage for the play. |
