Unit 3: Animal and Plant Cells

TermDefinition
cells the smallest unit of all living organisms; cells can look different and can perform different functions within the organism
microscope a high-powered magnification tool; necessary for observing cells
magnification/magnify using a specialized lense to observe things in greater detail; the higher the magnification, the more detail is revealed
hand lens a small tool used to make details of objects appear bigger
structure how something is built, shaped, and/or organized
animal cell the building blocks that make up animals; typically round or irregularly shaped
plant cell the building blocks that make up plants; typically rectangular or hexagonally shaped due to cell wall
organelles structures found within the cell, bounded by the cell membrane; each performs a function to keep the cell alive
function what something does or how it works; what job the object performs
nucleus regulates all activity within plant and animal cells
cell membrane acts as a barrier and controls what goes in or out of plant and animal cells
cytoplasm maintains the shape, the consistency of the cell, and provides suspension to the organelles in plant and animal cells
cell wall surrounds the plant cell and gives the cell structure
chloroplast stores chlorophyll and other materials to help plants make their own food
