Great Depression The stock market crashes in 1929 and people lose the money they had saved. Many people lost their jobs and many could not find jobs leading to widespread homelessness and starvation.
Dust Bowl Too much farming on the Great Plains causes huge dust storms that destroy farms. Ten of thousands of farmers have to leave their land.
Okie Migration Desperate and poor, the Great Plains farmers arrive in California. As many as 7000 arrive per month. There are not enough jobs for them and they are often turned away at the border. They are negatively called “Okies.”
Labor Unrest Farm workers form unions and strike in response to poor treatment and abuse by farm workers.
Juxtaposition Placing two (or more) images or ideas close together to emphasize the contrast (differences) between them
Personification Giving human traits to nonhuman things (Ex: The trees are dancing in the wind.)
Motif An idea, symbol, image, or device that appears multiple times throughout a text
Symbol When an object, person, or idea in a text has an additional meaning beyond its literal one
Foreshadowing A hint/clue that suggests what events might happen in the future in a story
Migrant Workers Farmers who move from place to place to harvest (pick) different crops (plants grown for food) in different seasons
Strike When workers refuse to work and try to stop all the workers from working in order to protest for better pay, conditions, or rights
Picket The act of standing outside a business and protesting usually while carrying signs and sometimes preventing people from entering
Wages The money that workers earn each hour that they work
Conditions The environment in which workers work: can be safe/unsafe; clean/dirty; long hours/short hours, etc.
Union An organized group of workers who take action together
