Science- Chapter 5

QuestionAnswer
True or False: Evolutionists account for the natural origin of life from nonliving materials because life exists, and according to them, there can't be any other way for life to begin. True
In the beginning what was the overall factor that organized matter into a solar system according to the nebular hypothesis? In the nebular hypothesis, gravity was the main overall factor that organized matter into a solar system. According to the Bible, it was God's word.
What scientific evidence shows that some of the wooly mammoths died suddenly? Some of the carcasses stil had vegetation in their stomachs and between their teeth, and some were buried standing up.
Describe a proper and an improper response when either secular or Christian sceintists observe somethign that does not fit their model of the solar system. Scientists either can change their model or they can ignore the problem.
What is the major problem with the theory of a slowly cooling earth producing thick ice sheets during an ice age? A slowly cooling earth has less and less moisture in the atmosphere available for producing snow. This is because the rate of evaporation depens on temperature. In this situation, a cold desert would develop, not an ice age.
Explain why a fossil of a tall tree trunk that extends through multiple rock strata is a problem for the standard, old-earth view of geology. Secular geology assumes very slow sedementation rate. A tree trunk will decay away long before the thousands of years needed to cover it with enough sediment to fossilize it.
How do bibilical creationists determine the age of the earth at the time of the Genesis Flood? Biblical creation uses the geneology found in Genesis 7 to calculate the age of Noah given in Genesis 7 tot he age of the earth at the time of the flood.
True or False: The Genesis Flood lasted 40 days and 40 nights. False
State three ways in which the biblical flood affected the world and people. 1. The flood completely reformed the earth surface. 2. All human history occurs after the flood. 3. The earth length of the human life decreased greatly after the flood.
What are two ways that geologists can date a rock stratum? 1. radiometric dating 2. relative dating
True or False: Scientific evidence today indicates that continents are not fixed in position on the surface of the earth, but slowly move. True
What do geologists believe is the driving force for sea-floor spreading? Geologists believe that hot, slowly rising plumes of mantle rock strick the lithosphere and spread out. Friction drags the ocean crust apart at rift zones.
What technology used during World War II revealed unsuspected ocean basin structure that reinforeced the idea of drifting continents? The use of sonar during WWII revealed new ocean basin structures.
What is an important geologic feature found in ocean basins associated with subduction of oceanic plates under continental plates? Deep ocean trenches are present where oceans plates appear to have subducted under continental plates.
Both secular and young-earth geologists agree on the essential aspects of the plate tectonics theory, except in what two key points? The two plate tectonic theories disagree on: 1. When the tectonic plate movements occurred. 2. How long they took to happen.
According to secular geologists, what kind of landmass formed again and again as continental came together and separated throughout Earth's history? Super continents
How long from start to finish were flood waters on the earth? 314 days (Genesis 8:13)
True of False: The nebular hypothesis correctly predicts the presence of heavy elements like iron, lead, and uranium in the earth's crust False
True or False: Geologists assume that the earth's magnetic field has always pointed in the same direction throughout Earth's history False
True or False: The bible narrative of the Ice Age is found in Genesis 11-13. False
