TermDefinition
Idiopathic idio- = self/unknown -pathic = disease Definition: Disease with no known cause Example: The patient was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis. Abbreviation: DX The patient was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Idiopathic seizures occur without a known trigger.
Prophylaxis pro- = before phylaxis = protection. Definition: Prevention of disease.Example: Antibiotics were given as a prophylaxis before surgery. Abbreviation: Px or Ppx The patient was given Ppx antibiotics before surgery to prevent infection. Flu vaccine serves as a form of Px against influenza.
Exacerbation ex- = out, acerb = bitter/severe, -ation = process Definition: A worsening or flare-up of a disease.Example: The patient had an exacerbation of asthma symptoms. Abbreviation: Exac or Exacerb The patient was admitted for an Exac of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).
Syndrome syn- = together -drome = running/course Definition: A group of symptoms that occur together and characterize a disease. Example: Carpal tunnel syndrome causes numbness in the hand. Abbreviation: Sx or Syndr
Asymptomatic a- = without; symptom/o = sign; -atic = relating to. Definition: Having a disease but showing no symptoms. Example: He tested positive but was asymptomatic. Abbreviation: Asx The patient tested positive for COVID-19 but was Asx.
Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) thromb/o = clot-penia = deficiency purpura = purple rash. Definition: Low platelet count with unknown cause, causing easy bruising.Example: Patient developed ITP after viral infection. Abbreviation: ITP The child was diagnosed with ITP after presenting with unexplained bruising.
Leukocytosis euk/o = white; -cyt = cell; -osis = condition. Definition: An increased number of white blood cells. Example: Leukocytosis often occurs during infections. Abbreviation: ↑WBC or WBC↑ Lab results showed ↑WBC, indicating leukocytosis.
Hypotension hypo- = low; -tension = pressure. Definition: Low blood pressure.Example: Hypotension caused dizziness when standing. Abbreviation: HypoTN or ↓BP The patient became dizzy due to ↓BP after standing up.Monitor fluids closely for signs of HypoTN.
Osteoarthritis oste/o = bone arthr/o = joint -itis = inflammation. Definition: Degenerative joint disease caused by breakdown of cartilage. Example: Osteoarthritis caused stiffness in the patient’s hands. Osteoarthritis: oa The patient has OA in both knees causing limited mobility
Cirrhosis Greek: kirrhos = yellow-orange (color of the diseased liver). Definition: Chronic liver damage leading to scarring.Example: Cirrhosis developed after years of alcohol use.Abbreviation: Cirr or Cirrh. Example:The patient’s Cirrh. was caused by long-term alcohol use.Lab results suggest progression of Cirr due to hepa
