Unit 4 Vocab

TermDefinition
Industrialization The change from making things by hand on farms to making things in factories using machines
National Markets When products are sold all over the country (not just locally), made possible by trains and better transportation
Assembly Line A way to make products faster and cheaper by having workers add one part at a time as items move down a line
Monopolies & Trusts When one company (or a small group of companies) controls an entire industry, leaving little or no competition
Labor Unions Groups of workers who joined together to demand better pay, safer working conditions, and shorter hours
Progressive Movement A reform movement in the early 1900s that wanted to fix problems caused by industrialization, such as child labor, unsafe factories, and unfair business practices
Muckrakers Journalists who exposed unfair business practices, unsafe conditions, and corruption to push for change
Tenements Small, crowded apartment buildings where many immigrant families lived, often with poor light, air, and sanitation
Ghettos Neighborhoods where immigrants or minorities were forced (by law or discrimination) to live together, often in poor conditions
Political Machines Local political groups that traded jobs, housing, or favors for votes, sometimes helping immigrants but often corrupt
Settlement Houses Community centers, such as Hull House, that helped immigrants and the poor by offering services such as childcare, classes, and job training
Urbanization Process where an increasing number of people move from the countryside to cities and towns. This makes cities grow larger, both in population and in size, as they expand to build more housing, stores, and roads.
Immigration Act of moving permanently from one country to live in another country. A person who does this is called an immigrant in the new country they move to.
Push Factors Negative things or problems that cause people to want to leave a place
Pull Factors Positive things or opportunities that attract people to move to a new place
