Parts of Speech
| Term | Definition |

| Common Nouns | Basic nouns that are not specific but can be seen. (teacher, school, pencil) |
| Proper Nouns | Specific nouns that can be seen and begin with a capital letter. (Mrs. Ciampa, Millburn Middle School, Monday) |
| Abstract Nouns | Ideas that are related to or demonstrated by people but cannot be seen. (excitement, adventure, freedom) |
| Pronouns | A word that takes the replaces a noun. (he, she they, it, them, me) |
| Adjectives | A word that describes a noun. (red shirt, happy baby, frightened animal) |
| Action Verbs | A word that demonstrates a behavior of a noun. (thinking, grabbed, start) |
| Linking Verbs | A word that connects a noun to an adjective. (is, was, am) |
| Verb Phrases | When one or more linking verbs and an action verb are used together. (has been studying, is going to leave) |
| Adverbs | A word that adds emphasis to an adjective or action verb. (clearly, never, much) |
| Articles | The words A, AN, and THE. A is used before a word that begins with a consonant sound and AN is used before a word that begins with a vowel sound.) |
| Interjections | A word that adds detail or emotion. (yikes, hello, hurray) |
| Prepositions | Shows the location, direction, or time of a noun or pronoun. (on top of, over, underneath) |
| Coordinating Conjunctions | The words For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So (FANBOYS) and they connects words, phrases, or sentences together. |
| Subordinating Conjunctions | A word that only connects simple sentences together. (while, since, unless) |
