APPELLATE JURISDICTION authority of a court to review the actions of an inferior court
BRIEF written statements filed before oral arguments are given before the Court
CERTIFICATE method used by a lower court when unclear and seeking an answer from an upper court
CIVIL CASE a noncriminal matter court case
CIVILIAN TRIBUNAL a judicial branch court that is separate from the military
CONCURRENT JURISDICTION shared powers of federal and state courts to hear a case
CONCURRING OPINION a written explanation of a justice in support of the majority decision of the Court
COURTS-MARTIAL a court of military personnel for those accused of violating military law
CRIMINAL CASE case where defendant is tried for a defined offense, usually against another person
DEFENDANT one who legal action is filed against and is being sued
DISSENTING OPINION a written explanation of a justice not in support of majority decision of the Court
DOCKET list of cases to be heard by a court
JUDICIAL ACTIVISM practice of justice interpreting Constitution and change with the current times and needs
JUDICIAL RESTRAINT practice of strictly interpreting the Constitution and precedents with little altering
JURISDICTION authority of a court to hear a case
MAJORITY OPINION the final official opinion of the Supreme Court in a case
ORIGINAL JURISDICTION the power of a court to hear a case first
PLAINTIFF one who takes legal action against another and seeks judgment as the suit filer
PRECEDENT court decision which sets the example for future cases of similar subject matter
RECORD official transcript of court proceedings
REDRESS satisfaction of a claim to the court
WRIT OF CERTIORARI order of a higher court directing an inferior court to send up a case for review
