What is the outside framework of the story? He is at a rest home talking to a psychoanalyst.
What are the four purposes of outside framework? They establish the reason for the end, provides intimate details, adds depth to the story / layer of meaning, and relates to the themes in question.
What is the inside framework of the story? Holden's story as a flashback.
What are the two purposes of inside framework? The thoughts and actions / development of the character is seen and it builds support for the themes.
What was Salinger's style? He was considered an idiomatic expression master ( used idioms well)
What is first person? The main character's point of view, and it is seen through the eyes of the main character, I pronoun.
What is a narrative? A story or account of events.
What is a confessional? A story of admittance.
What is the Stream of Consciousness? Every single thought that the speaker has.
What is dialogue? Conversation and talking; one person talking to another.
What is a flashback? Reflecting on something that's already happened.
What is colloquial language and slang (vernacular) Words that are connected to the time period and setting.
What are Salinger's 3 genres? Quest Narrative, Picaresque, and Psychological.
What is a quest narrative? A story where one seeks to discover truth, values, ones self, and ones place in society.
What is a picaresque? It is a chronicle, autobiographical story that presents the life of a trouble maker involved in non-important tasks. They make their living through wits rather than industry.
What is a psychological? Of the mind, relates to the mental and emotional state of a person.
What is realism? (1860-1890) The character is more important than action, middle class, comic, satiric, and matter of fact. Also verisimilitude, which is seeing the truth; true to reality.
What is romanticism? Focus on nature and its beauty. Emotion is more important than reason, and focuses on scenes over intellect. Also imagination is a shaping power.
What was the meaning behind the red hunting hat and was it a motif, image, or symbol? It represents protection, anger, nonconformity, and Holden's alienation and loneliness. It is a symbol and a motif.

Who is Mrs. Morrow? She is the mother of one of Holden's classmates whom he extremely dislikes and he meets her on a train to New York. Uses false name Rudolf Schmidt.
Who is Mr. Antolini? He is Holden's former English teacher who lets him stay at his house, and he gives Holden some good life advice, but he also is found stroking Holden's head.
What is a bildungsroman? It is a coming of age story when the character goes from childhood to adulthood; from innocence to maturity.
What is a symbol? An object used to display an idea or deeper meaning.
What is an image? A capture of an event or scene; visual representation.
What is a motif? Some element that's repeated throughout the story that hints at a theme.
What are Holden's psychological traits? Depression, isolated/alienation, lying, fantasy world, and emotionally unstable.
What is the meaning of the poem "Comin Thro' The Rye?" It is about a girl who is lonely and sad, looking for companionship. When a fling occurs, the world doesn't need to know about it; it is about maturity.
What does Holden interpret about the meaning of the "Comin Thro' The Rye? He thinks that it is about the protection of kids, and how they should keep their innocence. He thinks it's about childhood.
Who wrote the poem "Comin Thor' The Rye?" Robert Burns. He was a Scottish poet.
Who is Erine? He is the talented piano player who runs a nightclub and is "phony" according to Holden.
Who is Carl Luce? He was Holden's student advisor that meets Holden for a drink and he knows a lot about sex and calls Holden immature.
Who is Sunny? She is the prostitute that Holden hires, but does not have sex with.
What are three themes in the book? The loss of innocence and growing up, alienation and isolation, and phoniness vs. authenticity.
