Muscles

TermDefinition
Tendon - Connects muscle to bone.
Skeletal Muscle - Voluntary muscle that moves bones.
Cardiac Muscle - Heart muscle; involuntary and striated.
Smooth Muscle - Involuntary muscle in organs.
Sarcomere - Unit of muscle contraction.
Sarcoplasmic Reticulum - Stores and releases calcium in muscle cells.
Calcium Ions (Ca+2) - Trigger muscle contraction.
Actin filaments - Thin protein filaments in muscle fibers.
Myosin filaments - Thick protein filaments that pull on actin.
Troponin - Protein that binds calcium to start contraction.
Tropomyosin - Protein that blocks actin binding sites until calcium binds.
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) - Energy source for muscle contraction.
Endomysium - Wraps each individual muscle fiber.
Perimysium - Wraps groups of fibers into bundles (fascicles).
Myofibril - Long strands inside muscle fibers that contain sarcomeres.
Fascicle - Bundle of muscle fibers.
Epimysium - Outer covering of the whole muscle.
Muscle Fiber / Cell - Single muscle cell that contracts.
Electromyogram (EMG) - Test that records electrical activity of muscles.
Tetany - Continuous muscle contraction without relaxation.
