8)4-2 Periodic Table

period, group, energy levels, valence electrons

TermDefinition
period a horizontal row (left and right) of elements in the periodic table; tells the number of energy levels
chemical symbol an abbreviation of the name of an element
group a vertical column (up and down) of elements in the periodic table; tells the number of valence electrons
atomic mass the weighted average of the masses of all naturally occurring isotopes of an element
periodic table arrangement of elements based on atomic numbers
metals elements that are shiny and conduct heat and electricity well; located to the LEFT of the zigzag line
nonmetals elements that are dull, brittle and poor conductors of heat and electricity; located to the RIGHT of the zigzag line
metalloids elements that have some properties of metals and some properties of nonmetals; border the zigzag line
energy levels "circles" around the nucleus, where electrons are located
valence electrons electrons in the outmost energy level
Period 1 elements located here have 1 energy level
Period 7 elements located here have 7 energy levels
Group 1 elements located here have 1 valence electron
Group 17 elements located here have 7 valence electrons
Helium (He) this element only has 2 valence electrons, even though it's located in Group 18
Group 18 elements in this group are stable because they have 8 electrons (they do NOT form bonds)
