Confederation

What were the issues that the colonies were facing that could maybe be solved by confederation? Threats from the U.S.,threats from the Irish nationalists and other political, economic and military issues.
What caused the fear of annexation to increase? The annexation bill.
Was the annexation bill passed? No.
What did Russia sell to the U.S. in 1867? Alaska.
Who were the Fenians? They were a group of Irish nationalists who wanted independence from Britain.
What was the Fenians plan to gain independence? They planed to invade the British colonies and hold them hostage to force Britain to grant independence to Ireland.
In the province of Canada witch two groups were in conflict? The french catholic majority in Canada east and the English protestant majority in Canada west.
Who was John A. Macdonald? He was the Conservative Party leader in Canada West who wanted to uphold the rights of the French Catholic people and protect their equal representation in the government.
Who was George Brown? He was the Liberal Party leader in Canada West who wanted to diminish French political power and assimilate French Canadians.
Did Macdonald and Brown Agree about Confederation? Why or why not? They both agreed that confederation would benefit them because then Canada East and Canada West could each have their own local government.
How did Canada East feel about Confederation? Many of the citizens did not like the idea of Confederation but their leader, George-Etienne Cartier, thought that Confederation would benefit the French.
Which three leaders formed an unlikely alliance in June,1864 and what was it called? Macdonald, Brown and Cartier formed the Great Coalition to unite the province of Canada with the other colonies in British North America as well as Rupert's Land and the North West Territory.
Did the Maritime colonies support the idea of a union with the Province of Canada? No, because they think that they might lose power and independence.
Who was the lieutenant-governor of New Brunswick and what union did he support? Arthur Hamilton Gordon liked the idea of uniting New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and P.E.I.
Why would it have been hard for B.C. to join Confederation? Because they were so far away from the other colonies and also some people in the region supported annexation by the U.S. over Confederation.
Which colonies were represented at the Charlottetown Conference? New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., Canada East and Canada West.
What was the Charlottetown Conference? It was the first of three sets of meetings held between 1864 and 1866 to discuss and debate Confederation.
What happened by the end of the Charlottetown Conference? Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and P.E.I were all considering confederation.
