| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Gene | Sequence of DNA that codes for a protein and thus determines a trait: factor that is passed from the parent to offspring. |
| Base Pairing | Principle that bounds in DNA can form only between adenine and thymine and between guanine and cytosine. |
| Chromosome | Threadlike structure of DNA and protein that contains genetic information; in eukaryotes, chromosomes are found in the nucleus; in prokaryotes, they are found in the cytoplasm. |
| DNA | (Deoxyribonucleic acid) genetic material that organisms inherit from their parents. |
| Nucleotide | Subunit of which nucleic acids are composed; made up of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base. |
| Double Helix | The shape of DNA that resembles a tightly packed ladder that is spiraling on itself. |
| Replication | Process of copying DNA prior to cell division. |
| Chromatin | Substances found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of DNA tightly coiled around histones. |
| DNA Helicase | The enzyme that is responsible for unzipping the DNA during the process of replication. |
| DNA Polymerase | Principal enzyme involved in DNA replication. |
