Chapter 13 Vocab

TermDefinition
Gene Sequence of DNA that codes for a protein and thus determines a trait: factor that is passed from the parent to offspring.
Base Pairing Principle that bounds in DNA can form only between adenine and thymine and between guanine and cytosine.
Chromosome Threadlike structure of DNA and protein that contains genetic information; in eukaryotes, chromosomes are found in the nucleus; in prokaryotes, they are found in the cytoplasm.
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) genetic material that organisms inherit from their parents.
Nucleotide Subunit of which nucleic acids are composed; made up of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.
Double Helix The shape of DNA that resembles a tightly packed ladder that is spiraling on itself.
Replication Process of copying DNA prior to cell division.
Chromatin Substances found in eukaryotic chromosomes that consists of DNA tightly coiled around histones.
DNA Helicase The enzyme that is responsible for unzipping the DNA during the process of replication.
DNA Polymerase Principal enzyme involved in DNA replication.
