Joint Movements

Gliding Bones sliding against each other; wrists
Extension Increasing the angle of the joint and returning back to anatomical position - front and back
Flexion Decreasing the angle of the joint - front and back
Hyperextension Beyond normal anatomical - out of anatomical position - front and back
Abduction Away from midline - Side to Side
Adduction Towards midline - Side to Side
Circumduction Circulating with abduction and adduction
Medial and Lateral Rotation Rotating back and forth
Supination Hands, palms up; ulna and radius
Pronation Hands, palms down; ulna and radius
Dorsiflexion Toes up - ankles; tibia, fibula, and talus.
Plantar Flexion Toes down - ankles; tibia, fibula, and talus.
Inversion Soles in; talus, calcaneus (subtalar)
Eversion Soles out, talus, calcaneus, (subtalar)
Protraction Forward sticking outwards
Retraction Pulling back
Elevation Raising up
Depression Pushing down
Opposition Touching thumbs to finger, the trapezium bone and the first metacarpal bone of the thumb, which form the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint
Plane joint Flat on flat, carpals and tarsals
Hinge Flexion and extensions; one plane, and elbows and knees
Pivot Round thong in socket; one plane, radius and ulna, where a bone rotates around an axis.
Condyloid Shallow cub/round end; phalanges
Saddle A type of synovial joint where the ends of the bones are shaped like a saddle, with concave and convex surfaces that fit together like a rider on a horse
Ball and Socket Most mobile, head sits in socket (humerus and femur)
