1.What is political geography? Political Geography (Geopolitics) is thr study of how geographical spaces are organized politically.
2. What is a state? A state is a region with clearly defined boundaries that are organized and controlled by one sovereign government.
3. What does sovereign mean? Sovereign means independent.
4. What is a territory? A location that is claimed and controlled by a sovereign state is called a territory.
5. What is a nation? Group of people who share a common bond such as descent, language, or religion
6. Can a nation be in multiple states? Yes, multiple states can form a nation.
7. What is a nation-state? Combines elements of a nation and a state.
8. What are the four characteristics of a nation-state? Population, Sovereign, Government, Territory
9. What is an example of a physical boundary that can also be a political boundary? Californian mountains that also ride the border of other states
10. What is a political boundary? Borders that divide countries, states, provinces, counties, and cities.
11. What are the four types of economic systems used today? Traditional, Command, Market, Mixed
12. How does a traditional economic system work? Based on the traditional work habits and services provided by the people within that region. Doesn’t change much and neither does the standard of living.
13. How does a command economic system work? Has a centralized power that controls all the economic activity. (Usually Communist)
14. How does a market economic system work? Free market that lets individuals make own decisions. The government is not involved at all.
15. How does a mixed economic system work? Combines actions of market and command, also called a dual economy. Both play a part in the economy’s success. The U.S. has this type of economy.
16. What type of economic system does the U.S. have? Mixed economy that is Market and Command.
17. What is an urban area? Developed area with a large population.
18. What are the two types of urban areas? Towns and Suburbs.
19. What is a rural area? Anything not considered a urban area.
20. What is a town? Example of an urban cluster, has name and clearly defined boundaries, population between 2,500 to 20,000 and has a local government
21. What is a suburb? Areas that surround cities and other large urban areas, Smaller populations than cities, Usually residential areas.
22. What is urbanization? Process by which cities grow due to a population shift from rural areas to urban areas
23. What are two problems with urban environments? The two problems area Poverty- struggle to provide services and high cost of living. Environmental issues- poor air and water quality waste-disposal problems and high energy consumption.
24. What are land use patterns? Land use describes the functions of land for human purposes and economic activities.
25. What is an example of a land use pattern? Outdoor bathrooms, Restaurants, Parking Lot
26. What are the three factors that affect land value? Distance to transportation, Environmental Factors and, Distance from Central Business District
