Joint Functions

TermDefinition
Joint A place where two bones meet, connect bones for movement.
Synarthrotic Not moving
Aphiarthotic Moves a little
Diarthrotic Moving in two ways or freely.
1st Fibrous Joint - Suture Connected by dense irregular or regular connective tissue, in skull for brain to grow
2nd Fibrous Joint - Syndesmoses Joint held together by ligament, found in tibia and fibula. A syndesmosis joint is a fibrous joint that connects two parallel bones, such as the tibia and fibula in the lower leg or the radius and ulna in the forearm.
3rd Fibrous Joint - Gomphosis "Peg in a socket joint" ie: teeth held in skull with periodontal ligament, however does not apply to baby teeth. The PDL consists of a dense network of collagen fibers, fibroblasts, blood vessels, nerves, and immune cells.
Fibrous Joint Joints connected by fibrous tissue, consisting mainly of collagen, and are synarthrotic and have no cavities
Cartilaginous Joint Cartilage holds joints together
1st Cartilaginous Joint - Synchondroses Bones are held together by hyaline cartilage: epiphyseal plate, or sternum to first rib, and synarthrotic.
2nd Cartilaginous Joint - Symphasis Held together with fibrocartilage, amphiarthrotic, found in pubic symphasis and vertebral discs.
Synovial Joints Most mobile joints, diarthotic, most numerous, good nerve and blood supply -> sensing.
Synovial membrane Lines the joint capsule and produces the synovial fluid that lubricates the joint and reduces friction between the bones
Bursae Synovial flat sack, reduces friction with movement, and filled with fluid. Gliding surface
Tendon sheath Long, wraps around, also a synovial membrane sack. Reduces friction and facilitate smooth movement. Lubricates a tendon to allow it to slide smoothly
Ligament A tough, fibrous band of tissue that connects two bones together and helps stabilize joints
Tendon A tough, cord-like band of fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone, allowing for movement when the muscle contracts
Articular capsule Made up of fibrous capsule- providing support, protection, and attachment points and synovial membrane. Double-layered structure that encloses the joint cavity of a synovial joint, providing support, stability, and lubrication

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
