atomic structure

QuestionAnswer
What are protons? (+) charged and reside in the nucleus
What are neutrons? (0) no charge and reside in the nucleus
What are electrons? (-) charged and reside on energy levels or pathways.
What are individually and approximately equal in mass? protons and neutrons
What has a mass that is 2000 times less than that of a proton or neutron? electrons
What is the 1st rule of the atomic rules? Atomic number is the same as the number of protons in an atom
What is the 2nd rule of the atomic rules? Atomic mass is the number of protons + the number of neutrons
What is the 3rd rule of the atomic rules? The number of protons is equal to the number of electrons
What is the 4th rule of the atomic rules? Electrons move about the nucleus in energy levels
What is the atomic number? total number of protons in an atoms. It identifies an atom.
What does number of protons equal? number of electrons for a neutral atom
What is the mass number? total number of protons and neutrons in the neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. (round off the atomic mass from the periodic table)
What does number of neutrons equal? mass number minus atomic number
What are isotopes? atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons. Atoms with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons (same atomic number, different mass number)
What does the atomic number always do? stay the same
What does the atomic mass do? changes
What is the atomic mass? the weighted average of all the isotopes for an element
What is the periodic table? it contains information on all over the well known 100 elements. The elements, which include atomic number, chemical symbol, and atomic mass are also distributed on this table as well.
What is an ion? atoms with a charge

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
