| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Description | When the author explains something by telling what it looks like, sounds like, or feels like. The author uses lots of details so the reader can imagine it clearly. |
| Sequence/Chronological | When the author tells events in the order they happened (first, next, then, finally). |
| Cause | The reason something happens — the “why.” |
| Effect | The result or outcome — what happens because of something else. |
| Compare | To find how things are alike or similar. |
| Contrast | To find how things are different. |
| Solution | The way a problem is solved or fixed in a text. |
| Audience | The people the author is writing for — who the message is meant to reach. |
| Author's Purpose | The reason why the author wrote the text — usually to inform, entertain, or persuade the reader. |
| Excerpt | A part or passage taken from a book, speech, play, or movie, and examined on its own |
| Plunges | Jump or dive quickly and energetically. |
| Suspension | a bridge that has its roadway suspended by cables, which are supported by tall towers and anchored at each end. |
