PATTERNS OF EVOLUTIO

PATTERNS OF EVOLUTION

QuestionAnswer
What is speciation ? The formation of a new species from a pre-existing species due to isolation and genetic differences.
What must occur for speciation to happen ? Some type of isolation that prevents interbreeding between populations.
What is a species ? A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce viable, fertile offspring.
When two groups can no longer reproduce, what does it mean ? They have become different species.
What is extinction ? The elimination of a species from Earth.
What causes gradual extinction ? Slow changes like climate shifts or small natural disasters.
What is a mass extinction ? A sudden, catastrophic event that wipes out many species (e.g., meteor or volcanic eruption).
Define gradualism ? Slow, continuous evolutionary changes over a long period of time.
What is an example of gradualism ? Peppered moths becoming darker after the Industrial Revolution.
Define punctuated equilibrium? Periods of rapid change in species followed by long periods of stability.
Give an example of punctuated equilibrium. . Changes in mammal populations during the Mesozoic and Paleozoic eras
What is divergent evolution When different species evolve from one common ancestor.
Give an example of divergent evolution. A common mammal ancestor evolving into bears, monkeys, elephants, and koalas.
What is adaptive radiation A type of divergent evolution where species evolve quickly to fill new environments.
Define convergent evolution. When unrelated species evolve similar traits because they live in similar environments.
Give an example of convergent evolution. Birds, bats, and insects all have wings but are not closely related.
What is coevolution When two species evolve in response to each other's adaptations.
Give an example of coevolution. Flowers and the insects that pollinate them evolve together.
Which pattern of evolution involves mutual influence between two species Coevolution.
Which pattern of evolution involves the appearance of similar traits in unrelated organisms Convergent evolution.
Which pattern of evolution explains large bursts of change followed by stability Punctuated equilibrium.
Which pattern involves gradual, slow changes Gradualism.
Which pattern explains why mammals share a common ancestor Divergent evolution.
What is the difference between gradualism and punctuated equilibrium Gradualism = slow continuous change; Punctuated equilibrium = rapid change followed by stability.
Which type of extinction happens slowly over time Gradual extinction.
Which type of extinction is sudden and widespread Mass extinction.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
