| Monsoon | A seasonal wind pattern in southern Asia that blows warm, moist air from the southwest during the summer, bringing heavy rains, and cold dry air from the northeast in the winter |
| Sanskrit | The first writing systems of the Aryans, developed around 1000 BC |
| Republic | A form of government in which the leader is not a king and certain citizens have the right to vote |
| Democracy | “the rule of many”; government by the people, either directly or through their elected representatives |
| Polis | The early Greek city |
| Caste system | a set of rigid categories in ancient India that determined a persons occupation and economic potential, as well as his or her position in society, based partly on skin color |
| Dao | “Way”; the correct or divine way |
| Filial Piety | the duty of family members to subordinate their needs and desires to those of the male head of the family, a concept important in Confucianism |
| Confucianism | the system of political and ethical ideas formulated by the Chinese philosopher Confucius toward the end of the Zhou dynasty; it was intended to restore order |
| Daoism | A system of ideas based on the teachings of Laozi; teaches that the will of heaven is best followed through inaction so that nature is allowed to takes its course |
| Legalism | A popular philosophy developed in China toward the end of Zhou dynasty; it proposes that human beings are evil by nature and can only be brought to the correct path by harsh laws |
| Hinduism | the major Indian religious system, which had its origins in the religious beliefs of the Aryans who settled in India after 1500 BC |
| Buddhism | A religious doctrine introduced in northern India in the 6th century BC by Siddhartha Gautama, known as the Buddha, or enlightened one |
| Zhong Guo | the name that the ancient Chinese gave their land. “Middle Kingdom”. |

| Ethnocentrism | Belief that one's culture is superior to others |

| Golden Age | a period of great prosperity and achievement |
| Silk Road | ancient trade route connecting China and the Middle East |
| Humanism | focus on worldly issues |
| Aqueducts | Bridge-like structure that brings water to the city from the country |
| Latin | The language of ancient Rome. |
| Twelve Tables | The written legal code of Roman law. |
