TermDefinition
Hyperbole an exaggerated statement. ex. His bag weighs one million pounds.
Oxymoron a figure of speech that combines two contradictory words to create a new meaning. ex. jumbo shrimp
Alliteration the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of a word. ex. She sells seashells by the seashore
Paradox a statement or situation that seems self-contradictory but can be true. ex. less is more. I am a liar, and that is the truth.
Personification the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman. ex. The wind whispered
Metaphor a figure of speech that describes something by saying it is something else to make a comparison, WITHOUT using "like" or "as". ex. The classroom is a zoo.
Assonance when the same vowel sounds are repeated in multiple words.
Imagery the use of descriptive language that appeals to the reader's five senses ex.The aroma of freshly baked chocolate cookies welcomed her into the kitchen.
Foreshadowing a literary device where a writer gives hints or clues about events that will happen later in the story. ex. A terrible storm warning of events coming up.
Onomatopoeia a word that imitates the sound it describes. ex. "Boom", "Pow", "Pop"
Setting time and place the story occurs

Climax the turning point, directly impacts the outcome of the story
