TermDefinition
A person who creates maps, combining science, aesthetics, and technique to build a representation of an area. Cartographer
A map that highlights the physical features of the Earth, such as mountains, rivers, and lakes. Physical Map
A measurement of the number of people living per unit of area, often expressed as people per square kilometer or mile. Population Density
The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time, including temperature, precipitation, and wind patterns. Climate
Recurring characteristics of climate observed over time in a particular region. Climate Patterns
A measure of the warmth or coldness of an environment or substance. Temperature
Any form of water, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail, that falls to the earth's surface. Precipitation
Divisions of the year marked by changes in weather and daylight, resulting from the earth's changing position relative to the sun. Seasons
Areas with distinct climate types, such as tropical, arid, or polar. Climatic Regions
The distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees. Latitude
Regions close to the equator are typically characterized by warm climates. Low Latitude
Areas between the tropics and the polar circles, often experiencing moderate climates. Middle Latitude
Areas near the poles, known for cold climates. High Latitude
The height of a point on the Earth's surface above sea level. Elevation
A dense forest rich in biodiversity, found typically in tropical areas with consistently high rainfall. Rain Forest
A grassy plain in tropical and subtropical regions, with few trees and seasonal rainfall. Savanna
A barren area of landscape with little precipitation and harsh living conditions for plant and animal life. Desert
A large area of flat, unforested grassland, usually found in eastern Europe and Asia. Steppe
Forests found in the temperate zones, characterized by deciduous trees and seasonal changes. Middle Latitude Forest
Also known as a boreal forest, a biome characterized by coniferous forests and long, cold winters. Taiga
Relating to the region of the earth surrounding the equator, known for its warm and humid climate. Tropical
Regions with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters, often found on the eastern sides of continents. Wet Subtropical
A treeless region found in the Arctic and Antarctica, known for its cold climate and frozen subsoil. Tundra
Pertaining to the regions surrounding the Earth's poles, with extreme cold and ice-covered landscapes. Polar
A seasonal wind pattern that brings heavy rainfall, often affecting regions in South and Southeast Asia. Monsoon
A tropical storm in the region of the Asian Pacific Ocean. Typhoon
A powerful tropical storm with strong winds and heavy rain, occurring in the Atlantic and northeastern Pacific oceans. Hurricane
A violent, rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground, capable of causing significant damage. Tornado
