Public Relations

TermDefinition
public relations The way a business builds a good image and relationship with the public through communication, events, and positive messages.
publicity Free attention a business gets from the media, such as being featured on the news or in an article.
publicity stunt A planned event or action meant to get people talking and attract media attention. (Example: a fun flash mob or a creative giveaway.)
word of mouth When customers share their opinions about a business with friends or on social media. It can help spread good (or bad) news quickly.
guerilla marketing Using surprise, creativity, or unusual places to promote a product or event in a fun and unexpected way.
advertising Paid messages (like commercials, posters, or social media ads) created to get people interested in a product or service.
internal public relations PR activities focused on people inside the business, like employees or volunteers. (Example: newsletters or employee appreciation events.)
external public relations PR activities focused on people outside the business, like customers, the community, or the media.
press conference A meeting where a company invites reporters to share important news or make an announcement.
press release or news release A written statement sent to the media to share news or updates about a business, event, or product.
public service announcement A free message shared to help or inform the public about an important cause or issue. (Example: “Don’t text and drive.”)
sponsorship When a business supports an event, team, or cause (with money, products, or services) to get their name seen by the public.
cause marketing When a business partners with a charity or cause to promote both the cause and their product. (Example: donating a portion of sales to cancer research.)
community relations The ways a business builds positive connections with the local community through events, donations, or volunteering.
event marketing Promoting a product, brand, or idea through a special event, like a concert, sports game, or festival.
