TermDefinition
gamma ray shortest wavelength on electromagnetic spectrum. Highest energy, extremely dangerous, but can be used in controlled situations to kill cancer cells
X-rays short wavelength and high energy. used to detect broken bones
Electromagnetic spectrum range of all types of electromagnetic waves that travel at the speed of light. waves carry energy and can move through empty space (a vacuum) without needing air or matter
Microwaves longer wavelengths than infrared use for cooking food cell phone signals and radar
Ultraviolet light invisible waves just beyond violet light causes sunburn
ozone layer the shield to protect the Earth from ultraviolet rays from the Sun
infrared waves Just below red light. used for TV remote and night vision camera. is radiation given off by the Earth's surface as heat The greatest amount of electromagnetic energy reaching the Earth's surface.
waves Disturbance that carries energy from place to place as energy
Reflection the bouncing of a wave
medium the material a wave travels through
Transmission can pass through a glass allowing light to pass through instead of being absorbed or reflected refraction the bending of a wave
absorption energy of a wave is taken in
sound a disturbance or vibration that travels through a medium, cannot travel through empty space
frequency the number of waves passing a given point each second (TIME)
amplitude a measure of wave energy. as it gets higher the sound gets louder
refraction bending of a wave
analog signal can have interference and static. Example is AM radio and it's less reliable than digital
digital signal picture is clear used by computers. needs code on either side to work. reliable over long distances
radio waves longest wavelength and low energy. use for broadcasting radio and TV signal
Visible light only type of radiation that can be seen.
sound waves travel through matter
light waves travel through empty space / vacuum
digital signal benefits more reliable, less static, clearer pictures and sound, easier to duplicate can travel further

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
