| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| water cycle | the continuous movement of water between the atmosphere, the land, the oceans, and living things |
| evaporation | the change of state from a liquid to a gas |
| transpiration | the process by which plants release water vapor into the air from their leaves. It helps move water from the roots to the leaves and plays a role in the water cycle. |
| sublimation | the process in which a solid changes directly into a gas without first becoming a liquid. |
| condensation | the process by which water vapor in the air cools and changes into liquid water. |
| precipitation | any form of water, such as rain, snow, sleet, or hail, that falls from the clouds to the Earth’s surface. |
| weather | the condition of the atmosphere at a specific place and time, including factors like temperature, humidity, wind, and precipitation. |
| humidity | he amount of water vapor present in the air. |
| relative humidity | the percentage of water vapor in the air compared to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at a certain temperature. |
| dew point | the temperature at which air becomes fully saturated with water vapor and water begins to condense into liquid. |
| air pressure | the force exerted by the weight of air on the Earth's surface. |
| wind | the movement of air from an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. |
| visibility | the distance you can clearly see objects in the atmosphere. |
| air mass | a large body of air that has similar temperature, humidity, and pressure throughout. |
| front | the boundary where two different air masses meet. |
| jet stream | a fast-moving, narrow band of air high in the atmosphere that flows from west to east and can influence weather patterns. |
| thunderstrom | a storm that produces lightning, thunder, heavy rain, and sometimes strong winds or hail. |
| lighting | a sudden flash of electricity in the atmosphere, usually occurring during a thunderstorm. |
| thunder | the sound caused by the rapid expansion of air around a lightning bolt. |
| hurricane | a large, powerful storm with strong winds and heavy rain that forms over warm ocean waters. |
| storm surge | a rise in sea level caused by strong winds from a storm, which can lead to coastal flooding. |
| tornado | a rapidly spinning column of air that extends from a thunderstorm to the ground and can cause strong winds and damage. |
| sinkhole | a depression or hole in the ground caused when the land surface collapses, often because of water dissolving underground rock. |
| wildfire | an uncontrolled fire that spreads quickly across forests, grasslands, or other areas with dry vegetation. |
| muck fire | a type of underground fire that burns in the layer of decayed plant material, soil, or peat, and can smolder for a long time. |
| climate | the average weather conditions, including temperature and precipitation, of a place over a long period of time. |
| latitude | the distance north or south of the equator, measured in degrees. |
| topography | the shape and features of the land, such as mountains, valleys, and plains. |
| elevation | the height of a location above sea level. |
| surface currents | ocean currents that flow near the surface of the water, usually driven by wind. |
