water cycle Water cycle – The process of water moving from Earth to the air and back again.
evaporation Evaporation – When liquid water changes to water vapor (a gas).
transparent Transparent – Allowing light to pass through so you can see clearly through it.
sublimation Sublimation – When a solid changes directly into a gas without melting first (like ice turning into vapor).
condensation Condensation – When water vapor cools and turns back into liquid (forms clouds).
precipitation Precipitation – Water falling from the sky as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
weather Weather – The condition of the air and sky at a certain time and place.
humidity Humidity – The amount of water vapor in the air.
relative humidity Relative humidity – How full the air is with water vapor (shown as a percent).
dew point Dew point – The temperature at which air becomes full of water vapor and dew forms.
air pressure Air pressure – The weight of air pressing down on Earth.
wind Wind – Air that moves from one place to another.
visibility Visibility – How far you can see clearly.
air mass Air mass – A large area of air with the same temperature and humidity.
front Front – The boundary where two air masses meet.
jet stream Jet stream – Strong winds high in the atmosphere that move weather around Earth.
thunderstorm Thunderstorm – A storm with rain, thunder, and lightning.
lightning Lightning – A flash of electricity in the sky.
thunder Thunder – The sound made when lightning heats the air quickly.
hurricane Hurricane – A strong tropical storm with very powerful winds.
storm surge Storm surge – A rise in sea level pushed ashore by a hurricane.
tornado Tornado – A spinning column of air that touches the ground.
sinkhole Sinkhole – A hole in the ground caused when the ground collapses.
wildfire Wildfire – A large, uncontrolled fire outdoors.
muck fire Muck fire – A fire that burns underground in wet soil with dead plants.
climate Climate – The average weather in a place over a long time.
latitude Latitude – Distance north or south of the equator (affects climate).
topography Topography – The shape of the land (mountains, valleys, etc.).
elevation Elevation – How high a place is above sea level.
surface currents Surface currents – Water moving in the ocean caused by wind and Earth’s rotation.
