10/30/25 Matter and properties.

QuestionAnswer
4 states of matter and definitions solid - definite shape and volume liquid - definite volume but not shape gas - no definite shape or volume plasmas - an ionized gas
2 ex. of a chemical property Reactivity, corrosion, rust, flamibility
2 ex. of chemical change Explode, decompose, rust, oxidize, corrode, tarnish, ferment, burn, rot, digestion
2 ex. of physical property Density, color, odor, harness, melting point, boiling point
2 ex. of physical change Crumpling aluminum foil (Melting, condensing) *Changes of states
Difference between intensive and extensive properties Intensive properties are independent of the amount of substance present. Extensive properties are dependent of the amount of substance present
What is matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space
What is an atom? Smallest particle of an element in the building block of all matter
What is an element? A pure substance that can't be separated into simpler substances by physical or chemical means (and its made up of only one type of atom)
What is a compound? A pure substance made up of two or more different elements that are combined chemically in a fixed ratio
What is a molecule? A group of bonded atoms, which is one functioning unit
What is an example of a pure substance? Table salt (Any elements and compounds)
What are two examples of an element? Copper, oxygen, and gold, (anything on the periodic table)
4 examples of a compound Salt, baking soda, sugar, carbon monoxide
4 examples of a heterogeneous mixture Salad dressing, blood, dirt, milk, trail mix, concrete
4 examples of a homogeneous mixture Silver-mercury amalgam, lemonade, gasoline, steel, black coffee, air
What is an alloy? A mixture of two metals
An element is always _____ all the way through uniform
Can an element be separated into simpler materials? No
Over 100 existing elements are listed and classified on the ______ periodic table
Atoms are ______ combined in some way chemically (oftentimes they come together to form groups of atoms called molecules)
Can compounds be separated by physical means? No (separating a compound requires a chemical reaction)
What 2 elements make up CO2? Carbon and oxygen
What are mixtures Two or more substances not chemically combined
Mixtures can be uniform (called _______) and are known as solutions homogeneous
Mixtures can also be non-uniform (called ______) heterogeneous
Mixtures can be separated into their components by ______ means physical
What are compounds a pure substance containing two or more kinds of atoms
