TermDefinition
Limiting factor The struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat that has limited resources
Transition The changing pattern of mortality fertility and growth rates as societies cycle between demographic dominance
Dispersion The pattern of spacing among individuals within the boundaries of the population
Arable Land Land that is suitable for growing crops
Reproductive Potential The maximum number of offspring that each member of the population can produce over time
Demography The scientific study of population characteristics and dynamics
Migration The movement of organisms from one place to another caused by any number of reasons
Exponential Growth Population growth that is continuous because of the abundance of resources for an ever increasing population
Survivorship The percentage of newborn individuals in a population that can be expected to survive to a given age
Preservation To maintain areas of land or water in their present condition with as little human impact as possible
Exotic Species A species that is not native to a particular region
Carrying Capacity Largest number of individuals in a population that an environment can support
Biodiversity The variety of life found in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem at any given time
Endemic Species A species that is found in only one area and is especially vulnerable to extinction
Conservation Protecting and preserving natural resources and the environment
Niche An organism's particular role in an ecosystem or how it makes its living
Keystone Species A species on which other species in an ecosystem largely depend such that if it were removed the ecosystem would change drastically
Captive Breeding The practice of capturing members of threatened and endangered species so that their young can be bred and raised in controlled environments and reintroduced into the wild
Extinct A species that no longer has any known living individuals
Predation An interaction in which one organism captures and feeds on another organism
