institute (verb) To establish or set up
Individual Rights Rights held by individual people granting them the freedom to pursue their lives and goals without interference from the government.
Federalism System of government where the power is shared between the Federal Government, the States and citizens.
Republicanism A political belief that the best form of government is one in which citizens choose their representatives and leaders through free elections.
Separation of Powers The division of power amounts to different branches of government, so that one person or branch does not have too much power.
Limited Government A principle that holds that all legitimate government authority has certain limitations.
Checks and Balances Principle where each branch of the government is empowered to prevent certain actions by other branches in order to share power.
Two-Party-System A system where two major political parties consistently dominate the political landscape.
Representative Democracy A political system where citizens elect representatives to make decisions and govern on their behalf.
Amendment To change or add to a current law or policy.
Ratification To make a law or policy official.
The Declaration of Independence A historical document adopted by the American colonies on July 4, 1776, officially declaring their separation from Great Britain
The Articles of Confederation 1st constitution of the United States, serving as the nation's first government from 1781 to 1789. -weak central government - States had more Power - inability to collect taxes or regulate commerce

The Bill of Rights The first 10 amendments of the US Constitution.
