QuestionAnswer
earth system Earth´s interacting physical, chemical, and biological processes
geosphere the layer of Earth made up of solid rock and other rocky materials
hydrosphere the total amount of water on a planet.
cryosphere Earth's ice in all its forms
atmostphere The atmosphere is a layer of gas and suspended solids extending from the Earth's surface up many thousands of miles, becoming increasingly thinner with distance but always held by the Earth's gravitational pull.
biosphere the region on, above, and below the Earth's surface where life exists
air pressure the force exerted on a surface by the air above it as gravity pulls it to Earth
thermostphere the uppermost layer in the atmostphere
energy budget the flow of energy into and out of a system
mesosphere the strong lower part of the mantle.
sratosphere the layer of the atmosphere that lies between the troposhere and mesosphere.
trospsphere the lowest part of the atmosphere.
ozone layer the layer of the atmosphere at an altitude of 15 to 40 km in which ozone absorbs ultra violet solar radation
green house layer the warming of the surface and lower atmosphere of earth that occurs when water vapor carbon dioxide.
tempature a mesausre of how hot or cold something is.
thermal energy the total kinetic energy of a substance's atoms
thermal expansion an increase in the size of a substance in respond to an increase in the tempature of the substance.
heat the energy transferred between objects that are at different temaptures.
radation the transfer of energy as elctromagenitec waves.
convection the movement of matter due to differences in density.
conduction The transfer of energy as heat through material.
wind the movement of air caused by differences in air pressure.
Coriolis effect the curving path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to earths rotation.
global wind the movement of air over Earth's surface in patterns that are worldwide
global wind the movement of air over short distances.
jet stream a narrow band of strong winds that blow in the upper troposphere
ocean current a movement of ocean water that follows a regular pattern.
surface current a horizantal movement of ocean water that is caused by wind and that occurs at or near the oceans surface
deep current a stream like movement of ocean water far below the surface
convection current any movement of matter that results from differences in density
upwelling the movement of deep, cold and nutrient rich water to the surface

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
