What are the key differences between Baroque and Classical Music? Baroque has more textual complexity and polyphonic writing whereas classical writing is simpler and has a purer melodic line.
Haydn Born in Austria, began as a chorister at St. Steven's Cathedral in Vienna. Father of symphony and string quartet. Early Classical period.
Mozart Began composing at the age of 6. Composed works over 34 years. Austrian. Born in 1756.
Beethoven Born in 1770 in Germany. Father wanted him to be a prodigy. Performed for Mozart and studied under Haydn. Started losing hearing in early 20's. He was known for the emotion he brought to his music.
Symphony Large-scale orchestral composition typically in four movements developed sonata-allegro form in first movement.
String Quartet Chamber music ensemble with two violins, viola and cello typically in four movements.
Sonata A work for a solo instrument or small ensemble, usually in three or four movements.
Concerto A composition for a solo instrument or multiple soloists WITH an orchestra is and is typically in three movements. Dialogue between orchestra and soloist(s).
What is the layout of movements in the classical symphony? Follows four movement structure. 1 Movement: Sonata-Allegro, brisk themes. 2: Slow+lyrical, Adagio or Andante. 3: Minuetto or Scherzo, lively and dance like. 4: Allegro, exitement and complexity.
Sonata Form 3 Main Sections Exposition: Presents main theme Development: Introduces new material Recapitulation: Revisits themes from the tonic key.
Rondo Features a recurring theme (refrain) interspersed and contrasting episodes often in different keys. Also includes recapitulation where the main key returns in the tonic key.
What is Mozart's contribution to the opera tradition? Showcased his ability to blend showcase with music. Fast paced melodies, intricate harmonies, and more complex characters. Opera Butta, which was less serious and were meant to be funny.
What set apart Beethoven's symphonies from Mozart's and Haydn's? He expressed his emotions through his music and wrote the music for his ears alone. He also introduced new structural elements, complex themes, and more brass instruments.
Minuet/Trio An elegant couple dance in 3/4 time. Translates to the word "small". Often in A-B-A. Frequently used as the third movement in symphonies.
Opera Butta Comic opera. Originated in the 18th century. Butta means to jest or joke
Scherzo A light, playful composition. Often serving as the third movement of symphony sonata, or string quartet. Usually ABA.
Theme A simple musical idea that serves as the foundation of the piece.
Variations Composers create variations by modifying elements such as harmony, rhythm, or instrumentation.
