How did Prince Henry's actions lead to slavery in North America? He played a large role in beginning the Atlantic slave trade.

Why did Spanish and Portuguese owners of sugar plantations enslave African people? Harvesting sugar cane required many workers to be profitable so they used the slaves for labor.
In what industries did the Spanish use enslaved labor? mined gold and silver in Mexico and Peru and farmed on sugar plantations in the Caribbean
What other Europeans used slavery? Portuguese used slavery in Brazil and the English used slavery in their Carribean colonies.
What Europeans were involved in the Atlantic slave trade? Portuguese and Dutch were involved before the English.
How were enslaved people captured and transported? They were kidnapped or taken prisoner and were marched in chains to a seaport and transported across the Atlantic to be sold at a slave market in the Americas to work on plantations.
What was the Middle Passage? a trip across the Atlantic Ocean that enslaved persons had to endure
How did the conditions on slave ships contribute to the brutality of slavery? Slaves were treated like cargo in crowded spaces and chained on platforms. The ships were very hot and diseases spread quickly.
What was the first known instance of Africans being sold in the colonies? In 1619, Dutch pirates brought a group of slaves to Virginia to trade for food.
How did colonies define and regulate slavery? It was defined along racial, religious, and hereditary lines. Harsh laws and legalized brutal punishments were passed.

How were enslaved workers used in New England? On small farms, as tradespeople, or as domestic servants.
How did New England colonies benefit from slavery even if they did not use enslaved workers in large numbers? They benefited from the triangular trade, especially the import of rum.
What was the role of enslaved workers in the Middle colonies? They worked as domestic servants or dockworkers or in the fields.
What was the Germantown Quaker Petition? a document that protested slavery in Pennsylvania.
Why did people in the South stop hiring and paying indentured servants? Buying an enslaved workforce was more profitable.
What effect did slavery have on enslaved persons' families? Slaves could be bought and sold at any time, often breaking up families.
Why was life extremely difficult for enslaved people? They were treated brutally and had no rights. They weren't allowed to travel, testify in court, or learn to read and write.
How did enslaved workers resist the practice of slavery? Breaking tools, organized rebellions, trying to escape, working slowly, or pretending to be sick.
What were some of the skills enslaved workers brought with them from Africa? farming, metalworking, weaving and sewing
How did enslaved workers create their own community? They shared stories and folktales handed down from generations, kept African music and dance alive, and held on to religious beliefs of ancestors.
How did African American culture develop? Slaves blended elements of African and American cultures
What were the awful conditions aboard the ship during the Middle Passage? It was very hold, smelled bad, crowded, and no fresh air circulating.
Why do you think slave traders transported enslaved people in these conditions? Traders didn't think of slaves a people. They thought of them as cargo goods to be sold.
What did the Virginia General Assembly consider to be dangerous? Gatherings of large numbers of enslaved people for feasts and burials.
What did the act do to prevent gatherings of enslaved people? It prevented slaves from carrying weapons, leaving the slaveholder's property without permission, and allowed slaves to be punished.
Why would slaves be afraid to resist enslavement? They knew they would be beaten or killed if they tried to resist.
