What was the "SPARK" that started WW1? The spark was the assassination of arch duke franz ferdinand of austria hungary in 1914 and it started WW1
Militarism- The build up of military forces and belief that force was the main answer to conflict
Alliances- divided Europe into opposing groups
Imperialism -extending a countries nation and taking control of other countries
Nationalism- movement where people of same ethnic group and background want their own nation instead of being part of someone else's
Identify the three major Central Powers (Triple Alliance) germany, austria hungary, and italy
identify the three major Allied Countries (Triple Entente) France, Russia, and great britain
Explain the basic outline of the Schlieffen plan, what was its goal? Its goal was to avoid fighting on 2 fronts by quickly going through the Netherlands and Belgium to take out France before the French could react.
Why did the schlieffen plan fail? Because french achieved a quick victory before russia could fully mobilize
How did trench warfare cause a stalemate in the war? It made it easier to hold territory then gain it back
Explain what “No Man’s Land” was It was where the battle happened and it was very muddy and treeless.
What shape were trenches dug and why? Zigzaggz and to maximize defense
What did it mean to “go over the top”? To go over trenches into no mans land
What parts of the day were most attacks ordered and why? In the early morning at dawn or in the afternoon because it caught the enemies unaware.
What was the Zimmerman Telegram and how did it get the U.S involved in the war? A secret 1917 communication from Germany to Mexico proposing an alliance against the U.S. and promising Mexico financial support to help it reclaim Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona
Treaty of Versailles What did Germany have to do Agree with the war guilt clause and take full responsibility for starting WW1 and had to pay for war damage
Treaty of Versailles What happened to Austria-Hungary? They got split up
Treaty of Versailles Why did the treaty not actually bring lasting peace? Because it lead to WW2 and russia fought hard and placed 3 mill germans in czechoslovakia
