What is capitalism? Means of production are owned by private individuals.
What is communism? All goods owned collectively and payment of income based on need.
What is socialism? Most means of production is owned and controlled by the government.
What is suffrage? The right to vote.
What is the 18th amendment? Prohibition-banning manufacture, sale, and transport of alcohol.
What is the 19th amendment? Granting women suffrage.
What is the 21st amendment? Repeal 18th amendment.
What was the Great Migration? African Americans moved from the South to the North, East, and West looking for a better life. Many whites living in those places were not happy with it. 6 million blacks migrated.
What was the Dust Bowl? Severe dust storms in the southern great plains. Caused by drought and farmers over farming.
What does Laissez-Fare mean? Hands off.
Who was Franklin D. Roosevelt? He was the president after Hoover during the Great Depression. He tried to resolve it with the New Deal.
Who was Eleanor Roosevelt? She was FDR's wife, and the first lady. But she was special because she was the first lady to ever actually have a job, and was useful.
Who was Al Capone? He was the southside of Chicago gang leader and was a MOB boss during the 1920s.
Who was Herbert Hoover? The president during the time when the Great Depression happened. He believed in hands off.
What were two causes of the Dust Bowl? Severe drought and poor farming practices.
How were the Okies treated as they moved West? They were treated with discrimination, hostility, and poverty.
What was the Harlem Renaissance? The great migration caused 200,000 African Americans to migrate to Harlem New York which led to the African Americans to create a life celebrating achievements in music, lititure, and art.
What were two causes of the Great Depression? The Great Depression was caused by the Stock Market Crash because it caused many b=wealthy business owners to lose stock money, and not have money. Secondly because of bank failures. Because of this people couldn't get the money they saved in the bank.
What day did the stock market crash? It happened on Black Tuesday-October 29th, 1929.
How did bank runs affect the average person? The average person could lose their life savings if a bank fails. It can also lead to financial stress, missed payments, and loss of trust in banking systems.
What groups were KKK against and didn't want in America? Black Americans, Jewish people, Catholic immigrants, immigrants/ foreigners, and LGBTQ+ community.
What was relief? Relief was to provide assistance in those who needed it, direct payments to unemployed and poor, and temporary jobs created to put people back in work.
What was recovery? Recovery was to restore the economy to pre-depression levels, boost specific industries, and stimulating economic activity through government spending.
What was reform? Reform was to implement long-term changes to and prevent future economic crises, regulating the financial and banking systems, and creating social safety nets for citizens.
What were places people went to drink illegally during the 20s? They were Speakeasies.
What was a term to describe a person transporting illegal alcohol? They were bootleggers.
What did FDR have, leaving him unable to walk? He had Polio.
What were places made up by shanties and people who had lost their homes and were looking for work. They were Hoovervilles.
Which president reacted to the depression by doing nothing at first? President Herbert Hoover.
What were bank runs? The sudden withdrawal of deposits of just one bank.
What was the term for illegal alcohol made by individual people? It was called prohibition.
What was the white supremacist group called? The KKK.
What did FDR use for to communicate to the people about his plans to get out of the Great Depression? The radio.
What did he call the chats on the radio? The Fireside Chats.
What was the name FDR gave his ideas and programs to help get America out of the GD? He used the New Deal.
What ended the Great Depression in the end? WWll.
What was Social Security? An old age retirement pension.
What was FDIC? It was a program started to ensure people's money in banks to restore trust in them.
What was the AAA? It gave the government help to farmers and helped set prices on farm goods.
What was the CCC? It employed young men to work on and build outdoor projects.
What was the WPA? It was an organization made to employ people on public works projects.
What was the NYA? It gave work to young people during the Great Depression.
What was the Bank Holiday? It was a plan to close banks in hopes of putting money back into them to avoid closures.
What was Buying on Margin? Buying stock with loans requiring as little as 10% down.
