sebaceous glands Glands located all over the body; produce sebum
Stratum basale The deepest layer of the epidermis
Hypodermis The layer of skin under the dermis; stores fat
Sudoriferous glands secret sweat and are distributed in the dermis over the entire body
keratin a tough protein found in the skin, hair, and nails
integumentary system the enveloping organ of the body that includes the epidermis, dermis, sudoriferous and sebaceous glands, plus hair and nails
reticular layer the coat of skin superficial to the papillary layer
stratum spinosum The layer of cells in the epidermis superior to the stratum basale and inferior to the stratum granulosum
sebum an oily substance that helps keep the hair and skin soft
Melanin A pigment that protects the body from the damaging effects of ultraviolet rays (uv)
Epidermal dendritic cells initiate and immune system response to foreign bacteria or virus
Stratum corneum The epidermis outer layer
keratinocytes The cells within the epidermis that make keratin
Papillary layer The outer coat of the dermis
Merkel cells the skins touch receptors
epidermis the outer layer of the skin
