| Term | Definition |

| mountain | raised area of the earth's surface that rises somewhat abruptly and is larger than a hill |
| hill | a gently raised area of the earth;s surface smaller than a mountain |
| valley | a lowland between hills or mountains |
| plain | a flat or level area of land |
| mountain range | a long row of mountains |
| peak | the highest point of a mountain; a mountain that has a pointed top |
| isthmus | a narrow strip of land which connects two larger bodies of land |
| canyon | a deep narrow valley with steep sides |
| gorge | a deep, narrow pass between steep heights |
| volcano | a mountain with openings in the earth's crust through which magma escapes as lava |
| geyser | an opening in the earth's surface from which hot water and steam shoot up at certain times |
| desert | a land too dry or too cold to grow many plants |
| oasis | a desert area made fertile by the presence of water |
| marsh | an area of low, wet, soft land; a swamp or bog |
| island | an area of land completely surrounded by water |
| peninsula | a piece of land that is nearly surrounded by water (Florida) |
| altitude | elevation; height above sea level |
| sea level | the level of the ocean waters; used as a starting point to measure the height of depth of a location on earth |
