QuestionAnswer
What is a representative element? Elements in the S block or the P block
What is electronegativity? Also called electron affinity - the attraction that an element has for new electrons
What is ionization energy? The amount it takes to remove an electron from an atom. The first electron is always easier and requires less energy to remove.
What is the atomic radius? The measure of the size of an atom from the distance of the nucleus to the electron,
Which element has the highest electronegativity? Fluorine
Which element has the lowest electronegativity? Francium
Which element has the highest (first) ionization energy? Fluorine
Which element has the lowest (first) ionization energy? Francium
Which element has the smallest atomic radius? Helium
Which element has the largest atomic radius? Francium
Which family of elements don't possess electronegativity? Noble Gases
What happens if an atom gains a negative charge by gaining electrons? The atomic radius will increase
What happens if an atom LOSES electrons (making the charge more positive?) The atomic radius will decrease.
What are the three types of classification for the elements? Metals, Nonmetals, Metalloids/Semimetals
List the most important properties of metals. Shiny, typically gray in color, solid at room temp, good conductors of electricity and heat
What is an alloy? A mix of two metals that have better attributes than its parents (Copper+Zinc=Brass)
What are the properties of a nonmetal? Dull/no color, variety of color, all but one are solids/gases at room temp, poor conduction of electricity
What are the properties of a metalloid? Mixed properties from both metals and nonmetals
How did Dobereiner organise the elements? Using triads - he made groups of 3 elements that shared common properties - method eventually became obsolete
What was Newland's Law of Octaves? The fact that when placed in order of atomic MASS, properties tended to repeat every EIGHTH element - periodicity
Who was credited with created the modern-day periodic table? Mendeleev
What is a family in chemistry terms? A group where elemental similarities were more extensive, listed usually as a column on the periodic table.
Alkali Metals Found on G1 of the periodic table, violent reactions, found naturally only as part of compounds
Alkaline Earth Metals Found in G2, strong reactive metals
Chalcogens Found in G16, strongly reactive NONmetals
Halogens Found in G17, violently reactive NONmetals
Noble Gases Do not react under normal conditions, used to protect other substances, like paper
Transition Metals Found in G3-G12, Form more than 1 type of Ion, used to create colored compounds and solutions
Where are metalloids located on the periodic table? On the "staircase" part

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
