QuestionAnswer
What do the best scientists use to make observations? The best scientists use their senses.
When you make observations, what are you collecting? To make observations you are collecting data
What is the definition of data? The definition of data is the information you collect during research, experiments, or surveys
What are the two types of data you can collect? Quantitative and Qualitative
Define what Quantitative data means the data has numbers, quantity, and amount
Define what Qualitative data means the data has colors, shapes, size, and texture
What does CER stand for? Claim, Evidence, Reasoning
What is the purpose of the Claim(c) in C.E.R To answer a scientific question
What is the purpose of the Reasoning(r) in C.E.R The scientific explanation of the data
What is the purpose of the Evidence(e) in C.E.R The data you collected during the scientific process
What is the point of a scientific question? To create a specific, testable question that guides an experiment and can lead to new knowledge
What are the three types of variables? Dependent variable, Independent variable, controlled variable
what does dependent variable mean Things that you measure during an experiment to see how it changes in response to the change you made.
what does independent variable mean The part of an experiment that you change on purpose to see if it makes a difference to something else.
what does controlled variable mean Things you keep the same during an experiment to make sure it doesn’t change the results.
Why do scientists use tools and instruments? To help them make observations that are more accurate and reliable
What does it mean to be objective? It means that it can be repeated by others and get the same results.
Why is it important for scientists to stay objective? To help avoid personal opinions from affecting test results
What is full disclosure? Full disclosure helps make sure the data is reliable.
what is the process of full disclosure The process is while you make an observation, you can then make inferences based on your past experiments and prior knowledge.
What’s the main difference between observation and inferences? The main difference is that an observation is something you notice using your senses so it's fact based and an inference is a guess explanation using those observations and prior knowledge.
What are the different purposes of observation and inference? The purpose of observations is to collect quantitative and qualitative data and foster new knowledge. The purpose of inferences are to use the data you observed and background knowledge to guess what will happen next.
Why should we know the difference between observation and inference We should know the difference so we can so we can keep facts and explanations separate. This helps make experiments and conclusions more accurate.
What is a prediction? A prediction is a guess at what will happen in the future based on current information or trends.
How do scientists use predictions Scientists use predictions to formulate hypotheses that can be tested through experiments.
What’s the main difference between an inference and a prediction? The main difference is that inferences are about drawing logical conclusions from evidence, while prediction is about anticipating the future.
What is the scientific method? The scientific method is a process used by scientists to help answer questions.
What are the steps of the scientific method? Question Research Hypothesis Experiment Report conclusion Analyze Collect data
What’s the international system of units based on? Length, mass, time, electric current, temperature, amount of substance, and luminous intensity.
SI unit for length meters
2 tools you can use for length ruler and laser
SI unit for mass grams
2 tools you can use for mass Digital scale, balance scale
SI unit for time seconds
2 tools you can use for time clock and timer
SI unit for temperature kelvin
Unit we will use for temerature celsius
tool for temperature thermometer
How many grams in a kilogram 1,000 grams
how many millimeters in a centimeter 10mm
What is volume Volume is how much space objects take up
volume units for it for solids and liquids? The SI units are Liters and Cubic Meters
How do you find the volume of a solid geometric shape? We use the equation of Length x Width x Height
How do you find the volume of an irregular shaped object like a rock? What method can you use? You would find the volume of an irregular shaped object by using the displacement method
What are 2 scientific tools that measure volume of liquids? 2 scientific tools are a beaker and a flask
How do you make a strong claim? To make a strong claim, it must be specific and debatable
What are some different types of evidence you could use? Some different types of evidence you could use are scientific studies, expert opinions, or statistics.
What does reasoning draw on to help explain why the evidence supports the claim? Reasoning draws on scientific principles, theories, or concepts.
What could your reasoning include? What should you ensure your reasoning has? Your reasoning should include explaining relevant laws, theories, or facts that help clarify the connection. You should ensure your reasoning is logical and straightforward, allowing readers to follow your thought process easily.
