TermDefinition
Earthquakes the sudden shaking of the Earth's surface caused by the shifting and breaking of rocks deep underground
Fault lines fractures in the Earth's crust where blocks of rock slide past each other, most often caused by the movement of tectonic plates
Volcano an opening in a planet's crust where molten rock, gases, and ash escape from beneath the surface
Magnitude used in physics to describe the strength or intensity of a physical quantity like force or the power of an earthquake
Lava Lava is molten rock that erupts from a volcano, or the solid rock that forms after it cools and hardens
Magma Magma is molten rock found beneath the Earth's surface, formed when high temperatures and pressure cause rocks to melt
Divergent Divergent means different from each other or moving in different directions
Epicenter the point on the Earth's surface directly above where an earthquake starts
Pangea a supercontinent that existed from about 335 to 175 million years ago, when all of the Earth's continents were joined together in a single landmass
Alfred Wegener a German meteorologist and geophysicist who developed the theory of continental drift
Geosphere the solid part of Earth, from its surface to its core, including all rocks, soil, and landforms
Gravity the force of attraction that pulls objects with mass toward each other, and it's why things fall to the ground
Convection currents cycles of movement in fluids (like air or water) where warmer, less dense fluid rises and cooler, denser fluid sinks
Electromagnetic spectrum the entire range of all types of electromagnetic radiation, ordered by wavelength or frequency
