Cognition unit in AP Psychology

Cognition all mental activities associated with knowing, remembering, and communicating
Concepts mental groupings of similar objects
Prototypes Good example of category (but doesn't have to be perfect example)
Creativity Ability to produce new and valuable ideas
Divergent Thinking making new ideas or solutions
Convergent Thinking applying logic and knowledge
Functional Fixedness our tendency to think of things in terms of their usual function
Mental Set predisposes us to old methods for solving new problems
Heuristics simple thinking strategy for solving (sometimes correct, is thought of faster)
Algorithm step by step procedure for solving (always correct, is thought of slower)
Representativeness Heuristics using stereotypes to make judgements or decisions
Availability Heuristics Using the first thing that pops into our mind to make new decisions or judgments
Confirmation Bias Seeking validation for things you already believe in
Overconfidence The tendency to be more confident than correct
Anchoring Bias basing an estimate on an "anchor" estimate
Sunk Cost Fallacy the more time you spend on something is the more likely you are to stick to it though you should abandon it
Choice overload having so many choices it paralyzes you
Decision Fatigue reduced cognitive resources safter making a lot of decisions
