amendment a change to a law either one that's already been passed or one still being passed
appellate jurisdiction the power to reverse or modify the lower courts decision
electoral college a body of representatives empowered to select a candidate for a specific office.
executive branch branch of government responsible for carrying out and enforcing laws made by legislative branch
electors a person who has the right to vote in an election
elastic clause grants Congress the power to make laws that are necessary and proper to carry out its powers
federalism system of government that divides the power between a central authority and smaller units
due process of law means the gov must follow fair procedures and ensure equal protection of the law
grand jury a group of people selected to sit on a jury that decide whether the prosecutors evidence provides probable cause
habeas corpus law a court order that requires authorities to bring a prisoner before a court to determine guilty or not
house of reps lower chamber of the u.s. Congress responsible for creating and passing federal laws
impeachment the process of bringing charges against a gov official for wrongdoing
judicial review the power of the court to examine and declare unconstitutional to any law or action
legislative branch the part of government responsible for making laws and controlling gov spending
naturalization the legal process by which a non citizen becomes a full citizen of a new country.
original jurisdiction the authority of a court to be the first court to hold trails of certain kinds of cases.
pardon an official act by the president or by governor forgiving a person convicted for a crime
pocket veto when the president can reject a bill, when Congress is not in session
ratification formally approved
republic an indirect form of democracy in which people elect reps to make a decision.
separation of powers division of gov powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
