Meiosis Vocab

TermDefinition
Gametes Sex cells, egg and sperm
Homologous Chromosomes Pair together during Prophase I of meiosis due to their similarities like size, shape, and genetic content.
Somatic Body cells
Diploids Having two sets of chromosomes
Haploids Have only one set of chromosomes
Autosomes A picture of a person chromosomes
Meiosis reduction division Cell division that halves the amount of chromosomes
Cytokinesis Division of the cytoplasm
Karyotype Body chromosomes 1-22 pairs
Nondisjunction The process of receiving too many or too few chromosomes
Independent assortment The process by which homologous chromosomes randomly align themselves at the Metaphase plate which creates genetic diversity
Mitosis Cell division that produces two genetically identical daughter cells
Zygote Fertilized cell (sperm + egg)
Gene expression The turning on or off genes
Differentiation The process of becoming specialized (like a stem cell turning into a skin cell)
Crossing over The process of exchanging genetic information during Prophase I by nearby chromosomes
