| Term | Definition |

| Direct Characterization (DC) | The author TELLS the reader the personality of the character. |
| Indirect Characterization (ID | The author SHOWS the reader the personality of the character through STEAL.(speech, thoughts, effect, actions, looks) |
| ID: Speech | What the character says; how they speak. Ex: dialogue |
| ID: Thoughts | What is revealed in private thoughts and feelings |
| ID: Effect on others | The reaction of character(s) to the action(s) of others |
| ID: Actions | The behavior of a character (what they are doing) |
| ID: Looks | The overall look of the character that can reflect actions |
| TRAIT | Aspects of a character’s personality |
| DETAIL | Aspects of a character’s physical appearance |
| EMOTION | Aspect of how a character FEELS |
