QuestionAnswer
Property A characteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured.
Physical Change A change in the form or appearance of a substance, but not its chemical composition (e.g., melting ice).
Closed System A system where only energy can be exchanged with the surroundings, but not matter (e.g., a sealed bottle of soda).
Open System A system where both matter and energy can be exchanged with the surroundings (e.g., an open beaker of boiling water).
Gas Liquid A state of matter with no definite shape and no definite volume.
Liquid A state of matter with definite volume but no definite shape.
Solid A state of matter with a definite shape and definite volume.
Law of Conservation of Mass The principle that states that matter is not created or destroyed during a chemical reaction. The total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products.
Coefficient The large number written in front of a chemical formula in an equation (e.g., the '2' in 2H2O), indicating the number of molecules or moles of that substance.
Subscript The small number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol in a formula (e.g., the '2' in H2O), indicating the number of atoms of that element in the molecule.
Precipitate A solid that is formed and separates from a liquid solution during a chemical reaction.
Product Product The substance(s) formed as a result of a chemical reaction, shown on the right side of a chemical equation.
Reactant The starting substance(s) in a chemical reaction, shown on the left side of a chemical equation.
Chemical Change A process that changes one set of chemicals into a new set of chemicals with different properties (e.g., burning wood, rusting metal).
Mixture A combination of two or more substances that are physically mixed but not chemically combined (e.g., salt and pepper).
Compound A substance made up of two or more different elements chemically combined in a fixed ratio (e.g., water, salt).
Molecule A group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds (e.g., O2 or H2O).
Element A pure substance made up of only one type of atom (e.g., Oxygen, Gold).
Atom The smallest unit of an element that retains the chemical properties of that element; the basic building block of matter.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
Chemistry The branch of science that studies the composition, properties, and reactions of matter.
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space (volume).
Atom The smallest unit of an element that retains the chemical properties of that element; the basic building block of matter.
Element A pure substance made up of only one type of atom (e.g., Oxygen, Gold).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
