atom Basic unit of matter-the smallest part of an element
proton A subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom
neutron A small particle in the nucleus of the atom, with no electrical charge
electron A subatomic particle that has a negative charge and is found in a cloud surrounding the nucleus
valence electron Electrons on the outermost energy level of an atom
quark very small particles of matter that make up protons and neutrons
