Bill of Rights

6th Grade Bill of Rights Vocab

QuestionAnswer
Amendment A change or addition to the Constitution.
Bill of Rights The first ten amendments that protect people’s freedoms.
Freedom of Speech The right to share your thoughts and opinions.
Freedom of Religion The right to believe in any religion or none at all.
Freedom of the Press The right for newspapers and media to share information and ideas.
Freedom of Assembly The right for people to gather peacefully in groups.
Petition The right to ask the government to fix a problem.
Right to Bear Arms The right for people to own weapons for protection, with rules.
Quartering Forcing people to let soldiers live in their homes (not allowed without permission).
Warrant A paper from a judge that allows police to search or take property.
Probable Cause A good reason police must have before they search or arrest someone.
Double Jeopardy Being put on trial twice for the same crime (which is not allowed).
Self-Incrimination Being forced to say something that makes you look guilty (you have the right to stay silent).
Due Process The government must treat people fairly and follow rules when accusing someone of a crime.
Trial by Jury A group of ordinary people who decide if someone is guilty or not.
Speedy Trial A trial that happens in a fair amount of time, not years later.
Attorney A lawyer who helps defend you in court.
Bail Money paid to get out of jail while waiting for trial.
Cruel and Unusual Punishment Punishments that are too harsh or unfair (not allowed).
