Physiology - Midterm

Stratum Corneum (Wk. 4 Tissues & Skin) Outermost layer of the epidermis that protects against pathogens, water loss and injury. Made of dead keratinized cells.
Stratum Basale (Wk. 4 Tissues & Skin) Basal layer of the skin, site of mitosis (cellular division), contains living keratinocytes.
Layers of the skin (Wk. 4 Tissues & Skin) Stratum basale (germinativum), stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucid, stratum corneum.
Resting Membrane Potential (Wk. 7 Nerve Signaling) Steady potential difference when the cell is not firing
Action potential (Wk. 7 Nerve Signaling) A rapid electrical signal that travels along the membrane of a neuron or muscle cell.
Depolarization (Wk. 7 Nerve Signaling) Action occurs when a stimulus opens voltage gated Na+ channels, allowing Na to rush into the cell making the cell more positive.
Function of bone marrow (Wk. 5 Skeletal tissues & Skeleton) Stores fat, and produces blood cells
Cortical bone (Wk. 5 Skeletal tissues & skeleton) External portion of bone made of osteons
Epiphyseal plates (Wk. 5 Skeletal tissues & skeleton) Main site of long bone growth; initially made of cartilage
Cardiac muscle contraction (Wk. 6 Articulation & muscle contraction) Contract without CNS stimulation
