Definition of a political party An organization that attempts to influence government by electing their members to public office
Functions of political parties organize/channel public voices, recruit candidates, influence public voting, organize power in congress.
Two-party system definition A political system in which only two parties have a realistic opportunity to compete effectively for control of the government.
Relationship between the electoral system and the two-party system -Duverger’s Law The type of electoral system determines how many parties can realistically win, which explains why some countries (like the U.S.) have a two-party system.
interest groups A formal association of individuals or organizations that attempt to influence government decision-making or the making of public policy
Lobbyist someone who represents the interests of an organization before the government
rational choice theory Human behavior is rational most of the time; humans are driven by self interest, they usually minimize costs and maximize benefits
collective goods Some benefits of a group’s success (policy, law or service) are available to everyone whether or not they contributed to group efforts. Such benefits cannot be denied of anyone whether or not they paid taxes
free rider problem The free rider problem undermines efforts to create interest groups and motivating people to engage in public policy discussion or politics
Interest groups influence public policy by affecting elections, using the courts, shaping public opinion on issues, and influencing government decisions.
