| Rahab | A woman from Jericho who hid Israelite spies, thereby saving both herself and her family |
| The Gibeonites | A group of Canaanites who tricked Israel into making a covenant promising not to fight them |
| Achan | A man who took items from Jericho that should have been dedicated to God, resulting in Israel’s military defeat. |
| Othniel | Israel’s first judge, who is presented as the paradigm of what a judge should be |
| Gideon | A judge who delivered Israel from the Midianites, a much larger army |
| Abimelech | Son of Gideon who killed his brothers and attempted to become king of Israel |
| Samuel | Priest and prophet who governed Israel for many years and then anointed its first two kings |
| Saul | The first king of Israel, who disobeyed God, so none of his sons became the next king |
| David | King of Israel in the united kingdom period, depicted as very faithful to God (despite some sins), making him a model for future kings and promised a dynasty that would last forever |
| Solomon | King of Israel in the united kingdom period, known for building the temple and for wisdom |
| Jonathan | Son of Saul, who became a loyal friend of David and saved David from his own father |
